There is a considerable body of research today that
people who have been successful and happy are most often those who
have fostered strengths rather than focus on “rectifying” their
weaknesses.
However in our traditional schools we get into a “one
size fits all” mode. Many children whose academic strengths are
not high, end up with low self-esteem and without opportunities to
develop their real potential.
Sankalan believes that while every child today needs
a basic level of academic skills, it is necessary to focus on diverse
interests and career choices for many children and help them take charge
of their particular strengths.
Parents and schools need to have a long term focus
of identifying suitable career options – and many such options
are opening up today – rather than force some children into a
system that does them more harm than good.
