Methods and Approaches at Sankalan can be categorised into those
required for:
Building basic skills & knowledge
Learning at the child’s pace and re-inforcement at home as well as with
trained resource persons at school. Activities and skill drill as well as ensuring
that foundational work is done before the beginning every chapter in all subjects.
Building awareness / General knowledge
In addition to text books there would be regular classes based on Newspaper articles
and current events where the focus is on conversation, discussion and debate.
Children also bring articles or news items they find interesting to class.
Building a practical orientation
Children will work on a series of projects, both assigned and self chosen in
all subject areas to integrate and assimilate concepts learnt.
Building attitudes, dispositions & life
skills
On an on-going basis, through disciplined work, circle-time and discussions.
Choice of Subjects
The child may opt for a total of 6 subjects for the NIOS exam and may drop say,
a second or third language and learn only conversational Hindi / Kannada, so
that time and energy is conserved for fostering the strengths of the child
or improve basic language / practical maths skills etc.
Basic skills for exam orientation would
be included in all classes, and would be the main focus in classes
9 and 10.
